Official taxi fares in Quebec
In Quebec, taxi fares aren't set by the driver: the Commission des transports du Québec (CTQ) sets the rates, and they are the same for every taxi in the province.
- In effect since September 12, 2022
- Taxes included
- Decision 2022 QCCTQ 1249
| Charge | Day5 a.m. to 10:59 p.m. | Night11 p.m. to 4:59 a.m. |

| Pickup charge | $4.10 | $4.70 |
| Per kilometre travelled | $2.05 | $2.35 |
| Waiting, per hour | $46.20that is $0.77 per minute | $53.40that is $0.89 per minute |
| Levy, per trip | + $1.05 | |
Required by law, a $1.05 levy, taxes included, has been added to every trip since January 1, 2021. It is not shown on the taxi's rate sticker.
How the meter works out the fare
At pickup
The meter shows the pickup charge as soon as you get in.
While moving
At 22.537 km/h or faster by day (22.723 km/h at night), it charges for the distance travelled.
Slow or stopped
Below that speed (traffic, a red light, a stop you asked for), it charges for time instead.
On arrival
The $1.05 levy is added to the meter reading.
Whether the day or night rate applies depends on when the trip starts, and it stays the same until you arrive.
Example
10 km by day, no slowdowns
- Pickup charge
- $4.10
- 10 km × $2.05
- $20.50
- Levy
- $1.05
- Total
- $25.65
In practice, lights and traffic add a little time to the meter.
Montreal-Trudeau Airport
Between the terminal and downtown Montreal, the CTQ sets a flat fare, whatever the number of passengers, for a single pickup point and a single drop-off point.
Downtown roughly means the area between Atwater Avenue, Papineau Avenue, Pine Avenue and the river. Any other trip, such as Vaudreuil-Soulanges to the airport, is metered. The $1.05 levy applies in every case.
- Flat fare, airport and downtown
- Day$48.40
- Night$55.65
- Minimum fare from the terminal
- Day$20.60
- Night$23.70
When a different price can apply
The law allows a price other than the CTQ rates in only two cases:
- a price agreed in advance in a written contract with the customer, with a copy kept in the vehicle;
- a trip ordered through a fully automated app that tells you a maximum price in writing before you accept.
For a trip requested by phone, in person or hailed on the street, the rates above apply.
